UniMail USER'S GUIDE Version 1.0ABOUT THIS MANUAL This manual is designed to be viewed in a mono-spaced font (such as Monaco on the Macintosh) on a screen of at least eighty columns. Because of the size of the manual, it comes in two files: "Manual1.txt" contains sections 1 to 4, and "Manual2.txt" has the remaining sections.CONTENTS 1. Introduction 2. Installing UniMail 3. INTRODUCTION Welcome to UniMail version 1.0, a fully featured Unix-shell based e-mail client for the Apple Newton. If you haven't used UniMail before, start by taking a look at the "readme.txt" file in this directory. This has compatibility information and some general background, as well as details of how to pay for UniMail. If you've read that file already, keep reading through the next few sections. 2. INSTALLING UniMail UniMail can be installed using any Newton package installation program, including the new Newton Package Installer (available free from Apple for both Windows and Macintosh). The only file to install is the "UniMail.pkg" file in this directory. Once you have transferred the package to the Newton, you will need to create a service before you can connect. See section 5 of this manual for more information.3. UniMail OVERVIEW The UniMail program is divided into two sections: the mail editor and the communications system. The mail editor is where you read, send and file mail. The communications system handles connecting to a server and physically sending and receiving messages.------------------------------------------------------------------------4. THE MAIL EDITOR To get to the mail editor, simply tap on the "UniMail" icon in the Extras drawer. The mail editor has two major screens: the message view and the overview. The overview is what you see upon first opening UniMail. It shows a list of the subjects of messages filed in the current folder and the number of messages with each subject. (If you have just installed UniMail, it should simply say "There are no messages in this folder.") The message view is used to view and edit messages. Tapping on a subject in the overview takes you to the message view and displays the most recent message with that subject. To get back to the overview from the message view, tap the overview button (the small circle between the two arrows at the base of the Newton screen).4.1. Sending a Message 1. Tap the "New" button at the base of the UniMail screen. 2. Fill in a subject for the message in the slip that appears. Step 3 varies depending on whether your Newton is running version 2 of the operating system or not. If you have a MessagePad 100 or 110 or an older 120 then you are running version 1.3 and you should do the following: 3. Fill in the name, or part of the name, of the first recipient in the box below "Name". Tapping on "Name" shows a list of people from your Name file who match the entered name. Tapping on one of these will fill out the full name and the email address. You can also fill out the email address manually in the space below "Address". You can add additional recipients by tapping the "Add" button. The arrows at the base of the Newton screen allow you to scroll through the list of recipients. On a new MessagePad 120, or one which has had the 2.0 hardware upgrade, you should do the following: 3. Tap on the "To" picker and from the box that appears, select the recipients of the message. Steps 4 and onwards are the same on all Newton operating system versions. 4. Tap "Create". UniMail now creates a blank message and takes you to the message view to edit it. 5. Write your message. The message will be sent automatically next time you connect to a server and send outgoing messages.4.2. Reading received messages Newly received messages are placed in the "Unfiled" folder in the UniMail mail editor. To view the messages with a given subject, tap on that subject in the overview. The message view will then appear. The box at the top of the message view gives a list of messages starting with the most recently sent or received. Selecting a message from this box displays the message in the bottom half of the screen. If there are more than three messages with a given subject, then the scroll arrows to the right of the box allow you to scroll through them. The arrows at the bottom of the Newton screen allow you to scroll through the text of the current message. Tapping the info button (the small circle with an "i" in it at the left hand end of the separator bar) brings up more information about the current message.4.3. Forwarding, Replying To and Deleting Messages 1. Go to the message you want to route. 2. Tap the routing button (the small envelope at the right hand end of the separator bar). 3. Tap your choice in the list that appears. UniMail has routing options for both replying to and forwarding a message. Both of these items bring up the message addressing slip to allow you to change the subject and/or recipients of the message. For more information on routing, see your MessagePad handbook.4.4. Deleting Groups of Messages 1. Tap the "i" button at the base of the UniMail screen. 2. Tap "Delete messages" in the list that appears. 3. Use the radio buttons to specify which messages you want to delete, and the folder you wish to delete them from. 4. Tap "Delete".
