KeyMan v2.73---------------------------------------------------------------------copyright 1996 Stand Alone, Inc. & Ben GottliebNOTE: This software is for Newton 2.0 and 2.1 Newtons ONLY. * What's it do?--------------------------------------------------------------------- KeyMan (KEYboard MANager) is a collection of enhancements to the four built-in keyboards on the Newton. It also modifies Palm Computing's Graffiti (tm) handwriting recognition package, if installed.* What's in this archive?--------------------------------------------------------------------- There are three Newton software packages and three text files inthis archive. They are: * KeyMan.txt document you're now reading. 'Nuff said. * KeyMan.pkg software package you'll install on your Newton. * SASReg.pkg software package you'll install on your Newton to enter the password you get when you register KeyMan. * Register.txt read me file describing the Register software. * Register.pkg software package you can install on your Newton to use Register, which will allow you to pay for KeyMan via email. * SAStuff.txt A list of all Stand Alone products.* Installing KeyMan--------------------------------------------------------------------- First off, you must get the KeyMan software package onto yourNewton. You can do this using the Newton Connection Utility (for Mac orWindows), the Newton Package Downloader, or the Newton BackupUtility. See the documentaion with each of these for moreinformation on installing packages with them.* Using KeyMan--------------------------------------------------------------------- KeyMan modifies each of the four built in keyboards, as well asGraffiti, if installed. These changes are detailed below. Note thatKeyMan is an autopart, which means it has no extras drawer icon. It changes the fonts used in the QWERTY, numeric, and dateskeyboards, increasing their size by a point, and greatly increasingtheir readability.* QWERTY-style keyboard--------------------------------------------------------------------- KeyMan adds a row of function keys to the top of this keyboard. Many of these functions require that there be a current cursor point. If there isn't one, simply tap somewhere in the notepad, and aflashing cursor will appear there. The Key functions are, from left to right:All: This selects all text in the current area...if it's in the Notepad, it will select the current paragraph, if it's in an input line, it will select the entire line. Cut: If the Shift key is not selected, this will cut the currently selected text into a temporary clipboard. This will replace whatever is currently there (note: this is NOT the same clipboard that appears when you drag an item to the edge of the screen.) It deletes the current selection. If the KeyMan shift key is down, then this will add the selection to KeyMan's list of clippings (accessible via the shifted Paste key, see below.) It also deletes the current selection.Copy: This key is identical to the Cut key (both shifted and unshifted versions) except that it leaves the selection untouched. Paste: This key, if unshifted, will paste the contents of KeyMan's clipboard at the current cursor location. If the Shift key is down, it will pop up a menu of everything in KeyMan's list of clippings (you can add to this list with the Shifted Cut and Copy keys,) as well as an option to delete an item. Tapping an item will paste it into the cursor's current location. Tapping "Delete an item" will pop up another menu, from which you can choose an item to remove from the list. Special: When tapped, this key will pop up a list of options. If there is no current cursor point, only these options will appear: Use Dvorak Keyboard: This changes the keyboard layout to a Dvorak style layout Open Styles: This will open the Styles palette, allowing you to change font and ink preferences. Play Key Click Sound: This lets you turn off the key 'click' sound, which speeds up typing by a small amount Popup Menu when dropping: If checked off, this will popup the destination menu when you drop text onto KeyMan, letting you decide whether to copy/cut things to the clipboard or scrapbook Minimize: This will shrink the keyboard down to just the KeyMan buttons. If there is a current cursor location, than an additional three options will appear. These are: Paste Current Time: This will paste the current time at the cursor location. Paste Current Date: This will paste the current date. Paste My Name: This will paste your name (as entered in your preferences.)Forward Delete: This will just delete the character in front of the cursor. * Numeric keyboard--------------------------------------------------------------------- This keyboard gets a display appended to the top of it, with anon/off switch to the right of it. When it's off, the keyboard worksas normal. If you tap on the switch, the calculator will turn on.Now the keyboard will function like a standard, four function calculator. Tap on the number or operation keys (+, -, /, and *) toadd them to the current expression, or tap on the '=' key to evaluateit. It can handle either the '.' or ',' as decimal points (dependingon your locale.) Tapping on the display will paste the results afterthe current cursor position.* Dates keyboard--------------------------------------------------------------------- The dates keyboard has a small date picker added to it. Thisallows you easily select a date. Tapping on the arrows to the leftand right of the month will decrease or advance the month, respectively, and tapping on the year will pop up a list of years.* Registering KeyMan--------------------------------------------------------------------- You have a 30 day trial period in which to examine KeyMan, during which it will function fully.
