Scribe 1.0a2 & MenuScribe 1.0a5 by FlaSheridn@Aol.Com Shareware $10 for the pair. This is alpha software; there are known bugs, but none seems to be critical. MenuScribe puts a very small icon on your screen, with a pop-up menu of six texts which it can type. To configure these texts, you also need Scribe, which is a large configurable keyboard; Scribe can also type your name, address, and other things. Scribe ScribeÕs top rows of small keys contains punctuation, a delete key, arrow keys, an About button (Ô?Õ), and a Ô×Õ key to transfer you to MenuScribe. The middle rows of medium-sized keys will type your name, address, email address, phone numbers, AppleÕs enhancement phone number,* the last number and last fax number your Newton dialed, my address, the date, and the time. The six large keys are configurable. To configure one of them, press the ÔConfigureÕ key, then the key you want to configure. The top field is the title of the key, the bottom field is the text it will type. You can write in these field, type in them with either AppleÕs keyboard or mine, or drag text in from somewhere else. Scribe will remember the texts you define permanently; if you should ever want to delete the texts, press ÔConfigureÕ, then ÔDeleteÕ. Be careful, I havenÕt yet implemented Undo for this. MenuScribe You can also have your texts typed from MenuScribe, which (unlike Scribe) is small enough that you can leave it open all the time. Click on the triangle to pop up a menu of your texts, or select ÔConfigureÉÕ to switch to Scribe. If youÕre short on space, you can remove Scribe and keep MenuScribe once youÕve finished configuring. Contrariwise, you can keep Scribe without MenuScribe. In the alpha versions, if one of the two is installed but not the other, trying to transfer to the one that isnÕt there will give a harmless but ugly error message. ---------*1-800-Newton9 is the number your NewtonÕs modem should call to download the latest version of the operating system. The current version is 1.04; 1.05 is in the new Newtons and should be available soon for the rest of us. Having the In Box download enhancements is a good idea, but it forgets the last number you dialed when something goes wrong and you have to try again. A general note on Newton typing: You should first click where you want the text to go. If you donÕt, your Newton will sometimes let you type into the void. This is true even of the built-in keyboard, but is even more annoying with Scribe and MenuScribe. Note to developers: The text macros are stored in the System soup in a self-explanatory format with tag "UserTextMacros:FlaSheridn". ItÕs fine to use or change the array of text macros, or to make it longer, but shortening it may cause problems. So far I only store strings, but eventually I might want to store scripts. Following AppleÕs sample code, I create the soup entry on the internal store if it doesnÕt exist; but initially I look for it in a union soup.
