Locale Fix v1.1Copyright 1996, Douglas Miller Locale Fix is a freeware autopart package for Newton which adds persistent12H/24H time options, brings speaker dialing to your locale, and makes Australian Newtons measure distances in km not miles.REVISION HISTORY1.0 April 1996 First version (for Newton 2.0 only).1.1 June 1996 Now works on Newton 1.x as well.DESCRIPTIONWhen Locale Fix is installed it makes the following changes.o The current "Locale Country" is modified to enable tone telephone dialing via the built in speaker. In other words, if you currently have only the options "manual" and "modem" in the call slip pop up, Locale Fix will give you "speaker" as well. o If the current "Locale Country" is "Australia", it is modified to specify that distance is measured in kilometers (as of Newton 2.0 Apple still haven't fixed the bug that makes this setting "miles" for Australia). For example, Locale Fix will give Australian Newton users the right result for distance between cities in Time Zones.o A new "Locale Country" is created called " (24H)" where is the current "Locale Country". Selecting this new option from the "Locale Country" pop up will set your Newton to 24 hour time. This setting is persistent, i.e., it will not be changed by a system reset.Locale Fix undoes all its changes if it is deleted or frozen. If your"Locale Country" is set to " (24H)" then it will be changed back to "".RESTRICTIONS, WARNINGS AND DISCLAIMERSI recommend that Locale Fix be installed internally. You can installit on a card, but you will have to manually freeze the package (with an appropriate 3rd-party utility) before you can remove the card.Your model of Newton device may not be approved by your local telecommunications regulatory authority as a tone dialing device. If this is the case, then it could be illegal for you to attempt todial a phone via your Newton speaker.Locale Fix v1.1 has been tested for compatibility with Newton 1.05,1.3 and 2.0 and has no known problems. Naturally, I don't claim it has no problems, you should install it at your risk, I don't accept responsibility for any consequential damages, etc, etc.INSTALLATIONTo install Locale Fix you will need to unpack the package file fromits archive file and then download it to your Newton via a packageinstaller. If you need to get such software for your Wintel or Macintosh computer, I recommend Stuffit Expander and Newton Package Installer (or Newton Backup Utility) respectively. o If you are using Stuffit Expander for MS-Windows, you must set the two cross-platform options to "never" and "never" to ensure that the package can be installed.o If you are using a Macintosh you may find that your package installer won't recognise the Locale Fix package file. You should be able to rectify this with the provided Mac utility PackType (it sets the package file creater and type fields to commonly expected values).FUTURE DIRECTIONSIf enough people complain, I might consider getting Locale Fix to bebetter behaved when installed on a card.PRODUCTION NOTELocale Fix was developed with Steve Weyer's excellent Newt development environment. Newt allows you to develop applicationsusing NewtonScript and save as packages directly on your Newton. For more information: weyer@netaxs.com http://www.netaxs.com/~weyer/newton/releases.html
